A Candle in the Wind

“Like a candle in the wind…” Have you heard that song? It’s one of the most famous songs of all-time. Elton John sung it for Marilyn Monroe and then again for Princess Diana. No matter how famous someone is, life is so short. So fleeting. Like a candle in the wind. The coronavirus has reminded us of that, hasn’t it? We’re mortal. We’re sinful. We have so much less control over our lives than we think. We feel like nothing more than a candle in the wind.

You know what? That’s true! You and I are as weak as a candle in the wind. But listen to what the Bible says about Jesus: “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out” (Isaiah 42:3). Do you feel like a smoldering wick today? Than know this: Jesus isn’t going to snuff you out. No way! Instead, he came to save bruised reeds and smoldering wicks. He came to give us forgiveness, life, and light. We’re nothing but candles in the wind, but each one of us candles is held by someone very special: Our Savior Jesus! He came to mend broken hearts and broken lives like mine and yours. You’re a candle in the wind in the arms of Jesus!
