A Cup of Cold Water

I once visited an elderly couple at their house on a hot summer day—like today! They weren’t members of our church, but they had attended a recent worship service. When I arrived, the first thing the man did was offer me a bottle of water. I declined. I had just eaten supper. I wasn’t thirsty. The man insisted, kindly: “Please take it. I want to do what Jesus says. I want to offer water to one of Jesus’ disciples.”

I learned more from that man that day than he learned from me! He didn’t know me. All he knew was that I wanted to talk to him about Jesus. So he wanted to do anything he could to support the spread of the Gospel. He remembered Jesus’ words: “If anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward” (Matthew 10:42).

Whom could you support or encourage today because he or she is a fellow believer in Jesus? Whatever you do for the least brother or sister in Christ, Jesus sees it, and Jesus loves it. In fact, Jesus did the very same thing—only so much more. He gave himself for every “little one”—for every single person in the world. On a hot day, in a hot world, whom can you give a cup of cold water to today?
