A Foundation in the Storm

As I write this devotion, a hurricane is bearing down on the Gulf Coast. 100+ mph winds. Storm surge. Heavy rain. For people in the storm’s path, life is being turned upside-down. Schools are cancelled. Evacuations are ordered. Houses are boarded up. There’s so much uncertainty in a storm.

You know that. Whether or not you’ve ever faced a hurricane, you’ve faced plenty of storms. Maybe you’re facing a storm today. It could be a hurricane. It could be cancer. It could be waves of anxiety. It could be the weight of guilt or regret that envelops you. Storms turn life upside-down.

So Jesus gives you a foundation in the storm: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that those; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock” (Matthew 7:24-25).

Notice something: Even if you believe in Jesus, even if you hear and follow the Word of God, there will be storms in your life. Everyone faces storms.

But you have a foundation—a Rock: Jesus Christ and his Word. Jesus’ forgiveness can withstand the weight of every sin. Jesus’ presence can strengthen you against every wave of anxiety. Jesus’ promises give us hope even in the face of death. Remember: Jesus is our foundation in the storm.
