A Glorious Body

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. (Philippians 3:20-21)

We human beings can be very sensitive about our bodies. Would you agree? So how content are you with your body right now? We don’t need reminders that our bodies aren’t perfect—not even close! Whether it’s our weight or height or strength or an illness, our bodies aren’t what we want them to be, and they’re definitely not moving in the right direction. Every day, each one of our bodies grows older. Sin’s effect on our physical bodies is hard to ignore. We often don’t like what we see in the mirror.

So here’s God’s promise in the Bible: The Lord Jesus Christ, “by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body” (Philippians 3:21). What you see now isn’t what you will get forever! The lowly body your soul lives in right now isn’t your forever home. When Jesus returns on Judgment Day, he’s going to raise your lowly body and transform it into something glorious. You will be glorious, just like Jesus has a glorious body.

What’s that glorious body going to look like? That’s one of our big concerns, isn’t it? Are we going to be tall or short? How old will we look?… While the Bible doesn’t answer all of our questions, here’s the good news: None of that will matter in heaven! On earth, we focus so much on outward appearances. We judge each other based on our outward appearances. Not in heaven. In heaven, everything—and everyone—is perfect.

All the sickness and struggles and sin will be gone. All the guilt and embarrassment and shame will be gone. All the comparing and the judging and the anxiety will be gone. You will be you, and you will be loved perfectly by God himself. Because Jesus Christ has saved us—body and soul—and he “will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” How great to know that what you see isn’t what you get! Jesus already has a glorious body planned for you in heaven.

Dear Jesus, our world judges by outward appearances. The imperfections of our bodies can fill us with shame. Thank you for saving our bodies and our souls. We can’t wait for the bodies you’ve prepared for us in heaven! Amen.
