Are you trying to make a name for yourself? Be careful! It’s far too easy to be driven by sinful pride and selfish ambition. Deep down, we crave importance. Each one of us longs to make a name for ourselves, often at the expense of our relationship with God. Remember the Tower of Babel? It’s builders said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth” (Genesis 11:4). Remember God’s response? He confused their languages, crushed their pride, and scattered them over the earth.
You already have a name for yourself. Actually, God’s already given you the best name you could possibly have. You’re a child of God by faith in Jesus. It doesn’t get any better than that! What name could possibly be greater than being an heir of the King of the universe? No matter what you build, no matter what you accomplish, no matter how famous or infamous you become, nothing can possibly surpass being a Christian—a sinner bought with the blood of Jesus. You don’t need to make a name for yourself. The name God has given you is as good as it gets. May God bless your day, dear child of God!
