How long would it take to get rid of all the sin in our world? All the violence and abuse and anger and greed and pride and selfishness? That sounds impossible. How long would it take to get rid of all the sin just in the United States? How many years to atone for all the wrongs and heal the wounds and suffer for crimes? How long would it take to get rid of all the sin in your heart? The guilt. The shame. The pain.
Here’s how long: One day. Just one day. God made his people a very specific promise on February 15, 519 B.C.: “I will remove the sin of this land in a single day” (Zechariah 3:9). Sound impossible? About 550 years later, God did it. On a single day—Good Friday—Jesus died on the cross for the sin of the world. For the sin of Israel. For the sin of the United States. For your sin. And my sin. Jesus did what no new laws, what no president, what no moral reform could possibly do. Jesus removed the sin of the world in a single day. When you see sin, when you sin, run to Jesus. He already took your sin away.
