If God offered to give you anything you could possibly want, what would you ask for? Good health. Your mortgage paid off. A new car. A million dollars. Peace on earth. There are endless possibilities…
That’s exactly what God offered young King Solomon: “Ask for whatever you want me to give you” (1 Kings 3:5). The sky was the limit! Know what Solomon asked for? “Give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong” (1 Kings 3:9). Out of everything in the whole world, what did Solomon ask for? A wise and discerning heart. God was pleased! He said, “I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be” (1 Kings 3:12).
Wouldn’t Solomon’s humble request make a great prayer for you and me today? We face so many decisions. There is so much uncertainty. “God, give your servant a discerning heart to distinguish between right and wrong. Give me wisdom to focus my attention on the eternal, not the physical. Give me wisdom to trust in Jesus and his salvation. Give me wisdom to influence other people for their eternal good and to live my life according to your will.” May God give you a wise and discerning heart!
