Against Injustice

Do you know who is most upset and concerned by all the injustice in our country? God! We don’t often think about him, do we? The book of Proverbs says, “There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community” (Proverbs 6:16-19). Could there be more powerful words for our country right now? The God who always tells the truth hates lies. The God who gives peace hates seeing cities stirred up with conflict. The God who created life hates the hands that shed innocent blood.

So do you know what God did? The most unbelievable thing: He let his own blood be shed. God let guilty hands shed the innocent blood of his own Son Jesus to save the world. God used the greatest act of injustice in world history to save you and me from every unjust act our hands have committed and every lie our mouths have told. May our response to the injustice of our world not be to quickly rush into evil or to devise wicked schemes or to pour out lies or to stir up conflict in our communities. Instead, may we point to the forgiveness, healing, and grace found in the innocent blood of Jesus.
