Do you ever feel like you’re a target? A target for criticism or ridicule? A target for injustice or unfairness? A target for sickness or accident? Maybe even today it seems like arrows are flying at you from all directions. Doesn’t that make you feel helpless? It’s so easy to feel sorry for ourselves. What can you do to stop all the arrows?
You don’t have to. A pastor friend shared this picture with me recently. It was painted by a Christian man named Chris Powers and is meant to show the truth about all the arrows. There are a lot of them! Whom are they hitting? Jesus. Punishment for our sins. Threats from our enemies. Dangers on every side. Jesus stands between you and me and the arrows. Here was God’s promise to his people long ago: “No weapon forged against you will prevail” (Isaiah 54:17). Jesus stands between you and the arrows.
But what about when trouble does strike? What about when an arrow does hit home? Notice how the artist painted the one arrow that made it through a different color: White. That arrow isn’t an accident. It’s not one that God missed. That difficulty is part of God’s perfect, loving plan for your life. That’s also what God promises, right? “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). Like the man in the painting, in the midst of the arrows, fix your eyes on Jesus your Savior.
