Blessed Are the Peacemakers

Which side are you on? When I ask that, I bet you wonder, “On which issue?” Our society is so divided—on everything! Isn’t it sad? Everywhere we turn, we see hatred and anger and division and now violence. Masks or no masks… Safer at home or open for business… Black or white… Guns or less guns… Protest or not protest… It seems like there’s no end to the bitter divides. Which side are you on?

Here’s Jesus’ advice: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9). Isn’t that so different from what we hear around us? “Blessed are the peacemakers.” When he said “peacemakers,” Jesus wasn’t talking about law enforcement personnel, as thankful as we are for their service. He was talking about Christians. While it’s true that Christians are called to stand firm for the truth of God’s Word, when it comes to caring and loving and helping, Christians are the peacemakers.

Know why? We follow Jesus. Jesus is the greatest peacemaker of all. He didn’t make peace between races or cultures or politics. Jesus made peace between us and God. He came into the mess of our world. He took our sin to the cross. He sacrificed to bring us the real peace of forgiveness and eternal life. I know life might seem pretty hopeless right now. It isn’t. You have peace with God! Now, in your life today, where can you share Jesus’ peace? Don’t post that sarcastic comment. Seek to understand that person who thinks so differently than you. All because of Jesus. Blessed are the peacemakers!
