Blessed Even in the Drought

I was supposed to have a wedding today. A year ago, a young couple picked June 12th as their special wedding day. They planned a beautiful service in our church. Lots of family and friends were excited to come. Until COVID changed everything… What a disappointment!

Except, I can’t help but marvel at the text they had chosen for their wedding: “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit” (Jeremiah 17:7-8). What perfect words for a couple getting married in a pandemic! The one who trusts in the Lord is blessed even in the drought.

Here’s a little message for them and for every one of you whose plans have had to change so drastically: “Congratulations on your wedding! Here’s the verse you planned to have in your wedding service. I know things didn’t go according to your plan, but I know that God is teaching you to do exactly what this verse encourages: Trust in the Lord! Your marriage doesn’t depend on a wedding service or party, it depends on Jesus Christ your Savior. Rooted in him, your relationship will grow strong and endure even droughts like pandemics. May Jesus bless you and keep you as you trust in him!”
