Wouldn’t it be better to see Jesus? I mean, it’s great to celebrate Holy Week and Easter and all, but wouldn’t it be better if we could actually see Jesus in person? Then we could know for sure that he’s real. That he’s risen. That it’s worth it to believe in him. It would be better to actually see Jesus, right?
Know what Jesus says? No! No, it wouldn’t be better for us to see Jesus, at least not right now. When Thomas insisted on seeing and touching Jesus before he believed that Jesus rose, Jesus said, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29). Blessed are those who have not seen. Those are powerful, surprising words! We don’t need to see Jesus to know that he’s risen. We don’t need to see heaven to know that it’s real. Know why? The essence of faith is believing in what we cannot see. Blessed are those who believe without seeing.
Of course, one day we will see Jesus face-to-face in heaven. That will be wonderful! But that day hasn’t come yet. While we’re here on earth, Jesus has given us his Word and his promises. What more could we ask for? We’re blessed. Because blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed!
