By Grace through Faith

If you were to die tonight, where would you go? That’s the most important question in life. All of us are going to die. You can’t avoid it. So if you were to die tonight, where would you go? Do you know what most people tell me? “I don’t know.” Or, “I don’t want to think about it.” Or, “I hope I’ve been good enough.” Here’s the problem: You haven’t been. You haven’t been good enough. I haven’t been good enough either. We’re sinful, and we know it. That’s why on a day like Halloween, there’s nothing scarier than the thought of dying. If you were to die tonight, where would you go?

Here’s the truth: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). If getting to heaven depended on us, we’d have no chance. But it doesn’t depend on us. It’s all God. It’s all grace. In his love for us, God sent Jesus to save us from our sins. He died so that we don’t have to fear death. He rose, so that we can be sure that we’ll rise too. “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith…”

500 years ago, God used a man named Martin Luther to share that wonderful truth from God’s Word with God’s people. You have peace with God through Jesus. We’re saved by grace alone. By faith alone. By God’s Word alone. Jesus loves you because of how gracious he is, not because of how good you are. If you were to die tonight, where would you go? Heaven! By grace through faith in Jesus. Say a pray of thanks today for the parents and pastors and friends and teachers whom God has used to show you the way to salvation through Jesus. We are so blessed, aren’t we? Happy Reformation Day!
