Christmas Promises: To You!

In the animated Christmas classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” Charlie Brown laments, “Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?” In one of the simplest, and yet most powerful responses in cartoon history, Linus calmly quotes Luke 2:8-14, including the words, “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Then he confidently said to Charlie Brown, “That’s what Christmas is all about.” I pray that God give you the same clarity and certainly that Linus had about the true meaning of Christmas. “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you” (Luke 2:11). Of all the beautiful truths in that verse, one that I never want you to forget are the two little words, “to you.” Jesus was born to you! That’s good to know, because you need him. Even all the joy of the Christmas season can’t hide the sins that we carry in our hearts. Even all the outward smiles and happy songs can’t cover the guilt of what we did yesterday – or 30 years ago. If there’s a Savior from sin, I need him. If there’s a Savior from sin, you need him. It’s good to know that Jesus was born to you! That’s good to know, because that means that everything Jesus did, he did for you. When he left heaven to be born in a stable, he did that for you. When he kept all of God’s commands without ever sinning once, he did that for you. When he died on the cross, he did that for you. When he rose again and promised eternal life to all who believe in him, he did that for you. There is nothing greater than hearing that a Savior has been born to you!
