Whom are you encouraging? When Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr passed away at the end of May, accolades poured in from people around the country. He was known as being so much more than a football player. Here’s something that amazed me: Brett Favre—who played for the Green Bay Packers 30 years after Bart Starr—shared that Bart Starr wrote him an encouraging, hand-written note after every single game he played for the Packers. Can you imagine that? Favre played more than 250 games for the Packers. After every single one—without fail—a note of encouragement arrived in the mail.
I need that. You need that—encouragement! God knows that. That’s why he had the apostle Paul give Christians this encouragement: “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). Encourage one another! By God’s grace, we can say so much more than “good game” or “keep your head up.” How about: “Jesus loves you!” “You are forgiven!” “God has a plan for your life!” “Heaven is our home!” “You are not alone—God is with you!” With all the negativity in our world today, pull a Bart Starr. Whom can you encourage today with Jesus’ love?
