Even today, Abraham Lincoln is one of the most recognizable people of all time. His height. His hair. His hat. His beard. Even people with little interest in history can recognize Abraham Lincoln.
So here’s a surprising stat: When Abraham Lincoln was running for president in 1860, it’s estimated that only around 5% of voters knew what he looked like. With no internet and few photographs, Lincoln was nowhere near as recognizable as he is today. So how did people know whom to vote for? They had to read his words. They read the reports of his debates. They voted for him based on his word.
Doesn’t that sound strange? Today, everything’s a spectacle. Everything’s got to be entertaining.
That’s why it’s so easy to miss Jesus. Here’s the only way to know your Savior: Through his Word. Just like with Abraham Lincoln in 1860, our knowledge of Jesus doesn’t come from pictures or videos. It comes from reading Jesus’ words in the Bible. Jesus himself said, “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me” (John 5:39).
Want to find Jesus? Read his Word. Hear him describe his love for you that lead him to the cross. Hear him talk of his plans for you, both here on earth and forever in heaven. Hear his promises that, unlike any politician, he always keeps. If you want to find Jesus, read his Word.
