How generous are you? Before you answer, let me tell you how generous King David was. Near the end of his life, David gave a gift to help his son Solomon build a temple for God. Here’s how much he gave: 110 tons of gold (plus more than twice as much silver too!) Do you know how much 110 tons of gold is worth today? At $1,406 an ounce, that would be about $5 billion dollars. Wow! That’s generous!
After giving such a big gift, you’d expect that King David would be pretty proud of himself. “Look at how much I gave!” He wasn’t. Do you know how he felt? Thankful. Listen to what he prayed to God, “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand” (1 Chronicles 29:14). How could David be so generous? Because he knew who really is generous—our God! He knew God’s goodness. He knew God’s forgiveness. He knew that every blessing comes from God’s hand. David was so thankful to be able to be generous because of God’s generosity to him! What about us?
