God Made Them Male and Female

I believe in Jesus. I think you believe in Jesus. Believing in Jesus means we go to Jesus and his Word for answers, not to ourselves or to our friends or to what feels good. This is especially important when it comes to sexuality and marriage. Let’s go to Jesus! Jesus was once asked about marriage. Here’s what he said: “At the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate” (Mark 10:6-8).

When it comes to sexuality and marriage, Jesus makes two big claims. First, God decides our gender—“God made them male and female.” When God made you a man or a woman, he didn’t make a mistake. God made you the gender he wants you to be! Second, God decides what marriage is—“A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife.” It’s not complicated, at least in God’s plan. Marriage is one man and one woman for life. Not two men or two women. Not a man living with this woman for a while and that with that woman. God decides gender. God decides marriage. Not me. Not you. God!

So can we trust him? Think about it like this: Can we trust the God who invented male and female—sexuality—in the first place? Can we trust that the God who planned out the solar system also knows the best plan for our families? I think so! How about this: Can we trust the God who died for us? Jesus—the One who created sex and marriage—died for us who’ve broken marriage. Can we trust him? Yes! Trust in Jesus for forgiveness. Then trust in Jesus’ Word. God made them male and female.
