Happy Memorial Day! In the Bible, God often uses people and jobs here on earth to teach us about him. A farmer sowing his seed. A fisherman going through this catch. A shepherd searching for his sheep. A father showing compassion to his children. God uses us and our jobs to teach us about him.
There’s one occupation that’s connected in an extra special way with Jesus: A soldier who gives up his life. Here’s what Jesus said on the night before he himself died, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). Today we thank God for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for us. We remember how short life is, how sinful our world is, and our constant need for protection, bravery, and sacrifice. We’re so thankful for those who have laid down their lives for us!
And we thank Jesus that he has done the very same thing. Actually, Jesus took it a step further. He didn’t just lay down his life for his friends. He laid down his life for his enemies—for sinners like us. Not to give us freedom just in this life, but eternal life with God in heaven. Today we thank God for “greater love” shown by service members throughout the centuries and for the “greatest love” shown to us by Jesus.
