Hated?

Sometimes Jesus says things that I don’t like to hear. Here’s one: Jesus told his disciples, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first” (John 15:18). How does that sound? Not what I want to hear! I want to be loved and accepted. I want everyone to like me. I want everyone to believe in Jesus! But not everyone does. In fact, our world and our country and even our close relationships keep growing more and more hostile to Jesus.

That shouldn’t surprise us. Jesus spent his life loving and caring and preaching and sharing, and how did the world receive him? They crucified him! Should we expect a different response? No. “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.” Just remember Jesus’ promise: “You do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you” (John 15:18-19). I’m with Jesus. Let the world treat me like it treated Jesus, because I’m with Jesus!
