“How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?” (Psalm 13:1-2). Those words were written by King David over 3000 years ago. I bet you could have written those same words today. “How long, O Lord? How long?”
If you can relate to David’s longing prayer, then I pray that you can relate to David’s trust in God: “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, for he has been good to me” (Psalm 13:5-6). I don’t know how long, but God does. And his love never fails. His salvation brings joy. Even in the deepest sadness, God has been good to me. The next time you find yourself wrestling with longing thoughts, remind yourself: “I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoice in your salvation.”
