It’s Okay Not to Know

It’s okay not to know. That’s hard for me to say. Because I really want to know. I want to know everything. I want to know what’s going to happen next. I want to know what the future holds. I want to know God’s plan for my life. And when I don’t know, I get frustrated. Impatient. Sometimes angry or bitter. Does this sound familiar? Does this sound like you?

It’s okay not to know. At least, that’s what God tells us in his Word. In fact, not knowing is essential to faith. Faith is trusting in God even when we don’t know.

Like Abraham did. There’s an amazing statement in the Bible about Abraham’s faith: “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8). God told Abraham to uproot his family and move across the world. But God didn’t tell Abraham where he was going.

How would you have handled that? Here’s what Abraham did: “Abraham obeyed the Lord and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” He trusted in God, even when he didn’t know.

It’s okay not to know. It’s okay to believe. To trust that our God who created us and saved us knows everything. Since he knows, we don’t have to. We can trust and obey him. It’s okay not to know.
