Do you ever feel weak? Powerless? Incompetent to do all you’re asked to do? Here’s the truth: You are! Wait… That doesn’t sound like what I’m supposed to say. I’m supposed to say that you’re strong and you’re talented and that you can do anything you set your mind too. But you can’t. And you know it. The Bible tells us the truth: “We have this treasure in jars of clay…” (2 Corinthians 4:7). We are jars of clay. Strong? No. Powerful? No. Weak. Fragile. Sinful. Does that describe you?
There’s a reason God wants us to understand how fragile we are. “We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” When we look at ourselves, we see brokenness and sin. But when we look at Jesus, we see forgiveness and strength. Whatever good there is in us—whatever power lives inside us—all that comes from God, not from us! Paul writes, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). What a blessing to carry around God’s treasure in our jars of clay!
