“Just hang in there.” How often has a well-meaning friend or family member given you that advice? “Just hang in there. Hold yourself together. You’ll make it through!”
The truth is, those well-meaning comments are actually terrible advice. When it feels like you’re falling off a cliff, when it seems like you are hanging by your fingertips, the last thing you need to hear is, “Just hang in there.” “Really? That’s the best you can say? Because I can’t! I can’t hang in there. I can’t hold myself together. Can’t you see that I’m falling apart?” To be dangling by a thread, to watch life spin out of control, and to hear, “Just hang in there…” How?
Do you know who never says, “Just hang in there?” Jesus. Instead, the Bible says this: “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17). From before the creation of the world, there is Someone who holds all of life together: Jesus! Everything from the course of the earth around the sun to the course of your life today is in Jesus’ hands. Jesus is holding on to you!
And if you look down at those hands of Jesus that are holding on to you, you’ll notice something: Nail marks. Because the One who holds on to you loves you so much that he died for you. Whatever you’re facing today, don’t just hang in there. Trust that Jesus holds on to you!
