Maybe you don’t feel very special. Average at best. Maybe you don’t feel like you have any remarkable talents. No impressive qualities. You’re just a regular human being. Maybe no miracles ever seem to be part of your life. Just day after day of the same thing over and over again.
I wonder if John the Baptist felt the same way. Do you know how the people of Israel described him? “John never performed a sign…” (John 10:41). So much for a great prophet, right? John the Baptist never did any miracles. Not a single one. Nothing fancy. Nothing special.
But do you know what Jesus said about John the Baptist? “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:11). What? He didn’t do any miracles. What made him so special? Here’s the full description people had of John: “Though John never performed a sign, all that John said about this man was true.” John just pointed people to Jesus.
Maybe it’s okay to not be very special, because Jesus is the One who’s truly special. Maybe it’s okay to not have remarkable talents, because Jesus is the One who forgives and loves and saves us. Maybe life is meant to be day after day of living out God’s calling for you, while finding subtle ways to point people to Jesus. Jesus’ grace makes just average Christians into the most special people around.
