Learn from the Ant

There’s a lot we can learn from ants. At least, God says so. Here’s the Bible encouragement: “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!” (Proverbs 6:6). Know what ants are not? Lazy. Sluggards. They are always moving. Always working. Storing up food. Building up their houses.

In contrast, it’s so easy to be lazy, isn’t it? It’s so easy to fritter our time away. It’s so easy to let entertainment or the couch or doing nothing at all keep us from using our God-given gifts to his glory. The Bible warns, “How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man” (Proverbs 6:9-11). We human beings can learn from ants, can’t we?

The Bible says that single day of our lives is a gift from God. Your life isn’t purposeless. You are the unique creation of God, and he has given you time and talents and abilities that no one else has. Jesus has redeemed our hearts from sin and selfishness and set us free to serve God and one another.

God’s given you time today. What can you do with it? God’s given you energy today. How can you be productive? God’s given you hands and feet and a mouth. How can you use them today to serve others? God’s given you today. Let’s not waste it. Learn from the ant. What can you do to God’s glory today?
