Let Jesus Go First

It’s always good to be ahead, right? We learn that from little on. We what to be ahead! On a bike. In the classroom. On the court. At the office. We train to be first. We strive to be cutting-edge. It’s always good to be ahead, right? Not always. “Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son” (2 John 1:9). Do you ever run ahead of Jesus? Does the devil ever convince you that your cutting-edge thoughts are so much better than Jesus’ old words? Watch out! When it comes to God, what’s new is not true. There’s no prize for running ahead of Jesus. In fact, there are serious consequences: You lose God!

So let Jesus go first. Let’s Jesus’ Word guide and rule your thoughts and decisions. Here’s God’s promise: “Whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.” Let Jesus and his Word go first. I know that so many people around you are running ahead of Jesus. Don’t envy them. They’re not winning. Let Jesus go first. You’ll find that Jesus is a far better leader for your faith than you can possibly be. You’ll realize that Jesus is a far better Savior than you can possibly be. You’ll learn to appreciate that Jesus’ words bring more comfort, forgiveness, and peace than your thoughts ever do. Let Jesus go first.
