Look Up!

We in the Midwest have a problem: There are no mountains. That’s great for farming, but it makes it hard to follow some of the Bible’s best advice. Did you know that mountains are good for your faith? The Bible says, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2). What do mountains have to do with faith in Jesus? When you look at a mountain, which direction do you have to look? Up! Where does our help come from? Up! From our God!

Too often I go through life with my eyes looking down: Looking down at my own hands, thinking everything depends on me. Or looking down at my problems, with sadness or despair in my heart. Or looking down on others, blaming them for my sins. What do I need? A mountain—or anything that points my eyes up! Up to God and his control of my life. Up to Jesus and his saving cross. Lift up your eyes to the mountains. Where does your help come from? Your help comes from the Lord. Look up!
