Looking to the Interests of Others

Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4). Huh. Is that what you see around you these days? Everyone looking out for the interests of others? There have been beautiful examples of selfless service. There have also been a lot of examples of selfishness. Would you agree? Paul himself says later in this same chapter: “For everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 2:21). He knows our sinful human natures well, doesn’t he? We look for the best interest of ourselves! Look to the interest of others? We don’t do that!

But there is Someone who does. There is Someone who actually looks out for the best interest of others—always. Jesus! Think about it: Jesus gave up his throne in heaven. He took on our human flesh. He lowered himself so low that he died on a cross to save us. Why did he do all that? He wasn’t thinking about himself. He was looking to the interest of others—of us! Doesn’t trusting in Jesus change our mindset? The way to look to the interests of others is see that Jesus has your best interest in mind. Since he does, “each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
