185 mph winds. Can you imagine that? That’s the power that Hurricane Dorian brought to the Bahamas last week. 185 mph sustained winds, with gusts up to 220 mph! It is amazing – and terrifying – to think of the power of a Category 5 hurricane. When our brothers and sisters in Bible times saw the awesome power of nature, it helped them realize the awesomeness of God, because they knew that he was ultimately the One controlling everything around them. Hopefully the events of the past week remind us how mighty our God is! Mightier than 185 mph winds. The Lord is mighty! When we face storms and challenges so much stronger and greater than we are, it is a wonderful comfort to rely on the fact that the God who loved us and made us and saved us through Jesus is even mightier than the biggest hurricane. Here’s how Psalm 93 puts it,
The seas have lifted up, O LORD, the seas have lifted up their voice; the seas have lifted up their pounding waves. Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea—the LORD on high is mighty. (Psalm 93:3-4) May our mighty God be with all those who are suffering as a result of Hurricane Dorian, and may God’s promises lead us to trust in Jesus as we face life’s storms this week.
