“Silent night. Holy night. All is calm. All is bright.” I love singing that song. I bet you do. There’s just one problem: There’s no way it’s true! Think about it: On Christmas night, Mary gave birth to a baby. There is nothing silent or calm about childbirth. To make matters worse, she was in sort some of stable. There’s no mention of doctors or midwives. She was miles from home. How did that poor girl know what to do?
We don’t help the truth of the Christmas story when we sanitize it for ourselves today. Christmas night was anything but silent. There was pain and misery and blood and cries… And peace in Jesus.
Kind of like life. Isn’t this how God works? God doesn’t give us peace by making everything in our lives perfect. God doesn’t give us peace by having everything work out the way we want it to or by removing all pain and sickness or by letting everything be easy. He gives us peace by stepping into the chaos of our lives with his presence. On Christmas night, there were cries and pain and tears, but there was Jesus. Jesus made that night holy. Jesus made it calm. Jesus made it bright. In your life, I bet there are cries and pain and tears today, but there is Jesus. Jesus makes it holy. Jesus makes it calm. Jesus makes it bright.
