On Top of the World

My family and I just climbed a mountain. We went all the way to the top of Rib Mountain in central Wisconsin. It’s a towering 1940 feet. Okay, I know that for many states, that’s not very impressive. But for us in the vertically challenged state of Wisconsin, that’s about as tall as it gets. At the top of the mountain is a big rock. As we stood on that rock and looked down, it was cool to be on top of the world!

Is that where you’re at today? On top of the world? I doubt it. Maybe more like in the depths, or struggling somewhere in the middle. Doubts and fears weigh you down. Your sins have toppled you and your plans. Sadness and disappointment fill your eyes with tears. On top of the world? No way.

When King David was in the depths, here’s what he prayed: “From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2). There is a rock that is taller than you or I. Taller than Rib Mountain. Taller than the coronavirus. Taller than my sins and my fears. Know who that Rock is? It’s Jesus. Our God is a Rock that is so much higher than I.

Here’s the best part: You don’t have to climb or hike to get to Jesus. He comes to us and leads us to him. Through his Word and promises, Jesus sets us on top of the world. On top of the Rock that is taller than we are. You are God’s child. You are saved. You are forgiven. There’s no higher position in the world. No matter what you see in the world around you, you are on top of the world through Jesus and his grace!
