If you have cancer, is it better to know about it or not? Of course, we’d rather not think about cancer at all! But if there is a powerful disease slowing killing your body, would you like to know? You would! If you have cancer, you want to know, so that you can go to the best doctors and get the best treatment.
Our sin is like cancer. We don’t like to talk about it. Nobody likes to be told what they do wrong! It’s easy to see why many people are looking for churches that don’t talk about sin—or are leaving churches altogether. But like cancer, ignoring sin doesn’t make it go away. Pretending sin isn’t there isn’t going to keep it from growing. We need to know what’s infesting us, so that we can find the best doctor and get the best treatment.
Do you know what Jesus said? “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners” (Mark 2:17). Aren’t those great words? If you’re sick with sin, Jesus came for you! In fact, it’s only when you realize your sinfulness that you can appreciate our Doctor Jesus and his salvation. That means that Christian churches aren’t for “good people.” They are hospitals for the sick. The cure for sin is found at Jesus’ cross. Jesus died for sinners, to make us clean and new. Whenever you see your sins, don’t ignore them. Go to the Doctor! Find in Jesus forgiveness and peace.
