Who’s your favorite pastor? Be careful how you answer! It feels so natural to pick favorites in every area of life, including our pastors. But the devil loves to create divisions and take our focus off of Jesus. 2,000 years ago in Corinth, some Christians thought Apollos was the best pastor. Others thought Paul was the best. The result? They weren’t thinking about Jesus! Sadly, harmful divisions are far too common in churches today too.
So here’s what God had Paul write to them: “What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow” (1 Corinthians 3:5-7). What a powerful reminder for pastors like me: We are nothing but God’s servants sent to plant his Word. What a powerful comfort for Christians like you: Your faith and salvation doesn’t depend on any pastor. It’s God himself who’s working in your heart. Let’s keep the focus where it belongs—on Jesus. May Jesus be everyone’s favorite pastor!
