I had never seen such huge walls. San Juan, Puerto Rico was a coveted city. It was the first good port for European explorers after their long journey across the Atlantic. Huge, thick walls surround the old city of San Juan. Two large castles guard each side. I bet its residents felt safe inside their fortress!
We don’t have walls like that today. On the one hand, it’s a blessing we haven’t needed them in America. On the other hand, how often do you feel vulnerable, open, unprotected? Attacked from without and from within? Constantly under siege from powerful forces beyond your control?
Here’s the beautiful truth: You have walls surrounding you that are stronger than even the walls of San Juan: “The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress” (Psalm 46:7). God is our fortress! Attacked by the devil? You are forgiven in Jesus. Criticized by others? No one can snatch you out of God’s hand. Personal doubts and fears? You are wrapped in the arms of Christ. When you’re under attack, remember, “The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”
