It’s striking how the coronavirus has hit the U.S. right at Passover and Easter time. I read an article recently that compared the coronavirus with the 10 plagues in Egypt. The article reached this powerful conclusion: “This year, needless to say, there is an 11th plague and little rejoicing. The virus unleashed itself on us, and we failed to prepare for or respond adequately to its menace. This time, no sacrificial lamb can ensure that the Angel of Death will pass us by.” It’s too bad we don’t have a lamb to save us.
What a minute… No sacrificial lamb? I hope you don’t feel that way! That’s not true at all. We have a sacrificial lamb even more powerful than that 10th plague in Egypt. Listen to this: “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God” (1 Peter 1:18-21).
Just like the Israelites in Egypt, we have a Lamb who has saved us from death. Jesus Christ! He redeemed us from the emptiness of our sin by dying on the cross, and he saved us from the curse of death by rising from the dead. So our faith and hope are in God! Is it a coincidence that the virus is at its height as we celebrate Holy Week and Easter? With God, there are no coincidences. What a powerful connection. You have a Lamb. You have a Redeemer. He lives! Let’s put our faith and hope in our God.
