I bet you have your Christmas tree up. I bet there are at least a few special Christmas decorations around your house. I bet you have Christmas lights on your house, or at least you’re enjoying seeing everybody else’s lights shine at night. I bet you’ve made plans for Christmas gatherings.
But there’s one more thing. Actually, none of those things is the biggest way to prepare for Christmas. Do you know what it is? God sent John the Baptist to prepare people’s hearts for Jesus. Ironically, he didn’t say anything about trees or lights or dinners. Do you know what he told people to do to be ready for Jesus? “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 3:2).
If you want to be ready for Jesus, take your sins seriously today. Honestly confess them and turn away from them. Trust in Jesus and his blood shed on the cross for your forgiveness. Then repeat. And repeat. And repeat. A heart that’s truly ready for Jesus is a heart that daily repents and trusts in Jesus’ grace.
