Can you imagine having a lion stalking you? It’s great to see lions at the zoo, but having lions prowling around in real life would be a different story. People in the past had to live with that fear of lions stalking them as prey. It sends shivers down your spine, doesn’t it? At any moment, when you least expect it, a lion could devour you and your loved ones… I’m glad there isn’t a lion stalking me!
But there is. Listen: “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings” (1 Peter 5:8-9). There’s a lion stalking you. Who is it? The devil. He’s dangerous. Deadly. Always prowling. At any moment, when we least expect it, he attacks us with temptations meant to drag us into hell. There’s a lion stalking you!
So what should you do? Be “alert and of sober mind.” Don’t let your guard down! Instead, stand “firm in the faith.” Since faith comes from God’s Word, prioritize hearing and reading the Bible. Then look for a community of Christians to surround and encourage you. Your brothers and sisters in Christ around the world are facing the same attacks and temptations. We need other Christians to alert us to the devil’s attacks. We need other Christians to shield us with God’s Word. We need other Christians to share Jesus’ forgiveness with us. You’re not alone against the devil. Your Savior and your church are with you. May God make us alert to resist the lion today!
