When was the last time you looked up at the stars? I found out recently that a state park near where we live is a certified “International Dark Sky Park.” It far enough from artificial light that the stars really shine in the dark sky. Just like you. Did you know that? Those stars in that dark, dark sky are just like you! Listen to how the Bible describes you, “Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life” (Philippians 2:14-15).
Can I be honest? That doesn’t sound like me. Not complaining or arguing? That doesn’t sound like me. Blameless and pure? Not me! Child of God? That’s not what I deserve. A star in the universe? I don’t feel like that. But that’s what I am! By God’s grace. That’s what you are! By God’s grace. That’s the message of God’s “word of life.” You and I and every other crooked and depraved sinner who repents have been forgiven and given life by Jesus. Now his light and life shine in us and through us to the world.
Does it seem like the world is getting darker—maybe even “International Dark Sky” eligible? May God give you and I the grace and faith to shine like stars. How? Without complaining or arguing… By holding out the word of life… Take the time to look at the stars this summer. Then shine like them for Jesus!
