Show Me a Sign!

“Show me a sign!” How many times haven’t you shouted out those words to God, at least in your mind? Life is full of decisions. Life is full of difficulties and struggles. Life is full of doubts. Wouldn’t it be nice if God would just show us a sign? He has. At one particularly difficult moment in the history of God’s Old Testament people, God promised deliverance for his people, and he even offered to give them a sign. This is what he said through his prophet Isaiah, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). Here would be God’s great sign for his people: A virgin would miraculously give birth to a son, and that son would be called “Immanuel”, which means, “God with us.” Then God’s people could know that God would deliver them. Then God’s people could know that God would always love them. So have you seen God’s sign? It really happened, didn’t it? The virgin Mary miraculously gave birth to a Son, who is Immanuel – “God with Us” – our Savior Jesus. Jesus came to deliver us. Jesus came to show us God’s love.

As you face the decisions and difficulties of today and this week, do so knowing that God is with you. That’s even one of Jesus’ names – “God with Us”! Do so knowing that Jesus has saved you. Because God has already showed you the greatest sign of his power and love – Jesus! May God bless you as you prepare to celebrate our Savior’s birth!
