Talking with Dad

One of the beautiful things about little children is that they feel comfortable talking to their parents about just about anything. They have no shame in asking for ice cream, toys, monster trucks, or just about anything else their little hearts desire. And when they ask, they have this innocent confidence that their parents will most certainly be able to fulfill even their most outlandish requests. A loving father or mother has to smile at their boldness and tender trust. It’s that confident, trusting relationship between a child and his loving parents that Jesus uses to talk about our relationship with God. He says, “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:9-11). God invites you to talk with him as though you were talking with dad. As much as a loving father loves to hear the voice of his little child, regardless of what his request might be, God loves to hear your voice, regardless of what is on your heart today. As much as a loving father responds with love to the little voice of his child, you can be sure that your heavenly Father will lovingly hear and answer your prayer to him. It’s just like talking with dad! As you celebrated your father this weekend, I hope you take a moment to appreciate your heavenly Father too. Maybe your earthly father hasn’t been a great example of God’s love to you. Maybe Father’s Day brings more painful memories than joy. Regardless of what your experience with fathers has been on earth, I pray you remember that you have a heavenly Father who loves you perfectly, who delights to hear your voice, and who has prepared a home for you in heaven. So pray to him as boldly and confidently as a dear child talks to his dear father. Just like talking with dad…
