Everything can be gone in an instant. Have you learned that over the past two months? I have! So many things in our world seem so certain and solid and trustworthy, until there’re gone. Baseball. Money. Jobs. Security. Friendships. Health. “Normal” life. Everything can be gone in an instant.
So do you know what’s going to last forever? You! Here’s how the Bible puts it: “The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever” (1 John 2:17). What a contrast! The world and everything in it is going to pass away, but you who love the Lord and his Word live forever.
Do you think God’s giving us a wake-up call to focus on the forever things? Instead of longing for baseball to be back, rejoice that God’s love endures forever. Instead of fretting your shrinking savings, trust that you have treasures in heaven. Instead of complaining about government, look to your Savior Jesus, who’s the Resurrection and the Life. Instead of longing to get away, treasure the time God’s giving you with the people in your family. Because “the world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” The only things you can take with you from this life to the next are people—the people who share your faith in Jesus. So let’s focus on the forever things!
