Some sins are not hard to figure out. If I love money more than Jesus, it’s wrong! It’s still tempting, but it’s not hard to see the danger. If I love sports more than Jesus, it’s wrong! If I love my cabin more than Jesus, it’s wrong! But here’s a sin that’s hard to see: Jesus says, “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me” (Matthew 10:37). Huh. If you love your children more than Jesus, that’s wrong too. If you love your parents more than Jesus, that’s wrong too. Who’s first in your heart? Who’s your greatest love?
As hard as Jesus’ words sound, he deserves it. Jesus deserves every single ounce of our love. Why? He’s done the very same for you. Do you know whom Jesus loves more than anything else in the whole world? You! You’re his greatest love. The same is true for God the Father. God the Father sent his only Son to die on the cross to save you and forgive you. You’re God’s greatest love! Nobody loves you like Jesus loves you. So may you not love anybody—not even your children or parents—more than Jesus.
