You want to learn about God? One of the best things to do is go outside. Here’s why: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world” (Psalm 19:1-4).
We can learn so much about our God by looking at what he has made. When you see lightening and hear thunder, you learn that God is powerful. When you see a flower bloom, you learn that God is beautiful. When you see an animal like a duck with its webbed feet and strange bill, you learn that God is creative and intelligent. When you see the stars twinkling so far away, you learn that God is big. Really big! “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” They sure do!
In fact, nature displays so many of God’s characteristics that it’s been a temptation for people of all ages to worship nature as god instead of God himself. From the sun and moon gods of the past to “Mother Earth” or “Mother Nature” today, isn’t it easy to love the things God created instead of the One who created them? May God protect our hearts from worshipping creation instead of our Creator.
That’s why if you want to learn about God, you can’t just go outside. You need to open up God’s Word. It’s only in the Bible that we learn who God truly is—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Most importantly, it’s only in the Bible that we learn about how God the Son—Jesus—died and rose to save you and me. That God who made the lightning and thunder? He loves you! That God who created flowers and ducks? He died for you! That God who’s bigger than the universe? He’s got your life in his hands. Wow! May the heavens and earth—and you and I—declare the glory of God!
