The Key to Long Life

An American entrepreneur has made the bold claim that he’s going to live to be 180 years. By carefully watching his diet, taking lots of supplements, and following a lot of special habits like cold showers, he’s convinced he’s well on his way. In fact, he’s made it all the way to 45! Do you think he’ll make it to 180? How long do you think he’s going to live? Well, the average American lives to be about 78.

Know what’s surprising? Listen to how Moses described the average life span 3,500 years ago: “The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away” (Psalm 90:10). Some things haven’t changed, have they?

That’s because life isn’t under our control. No supplements can take away the curse of sin in our bodies and in our world. If you follow all the right steps, you’re still going to die. Your body is wearing out. Even if you are protected by God from viruses and cancer and accident, you’ll make it to be… 70 or 80 years, just like Moses said! And those years aren’t going to be easy. They will bring lots of trouble and sorrow.

So what’s our hope? The key to long life—to eternal life—isn’t diet. It’s Jesus. He’s the one who took away the curse of sin and offers eternal life to everyone who believes in him. You want to live to be 180? Or 180,000? Trust in Jesus. Make his Word a steady diet each and every day. As you care for the physical body God has given you, remember that Jesus is the one who makes you live forever! That’s long life.
