The Least

If there’s any doubt about whom Jesus cares about, just look at how he describes Judgment Day. According to Jesus, on Judgment Day, the King will look at the believers in Jesus on his right and say, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me” (Matthew 25:24-36). When those believers ask when they did those things for God, the King replies, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).

Whom does Jesus care about? Everyone—even “the least”! Jesus proved that over and over again during his time on earth. Jesus went out of his way to heal the sick, to preach to the poor, to seek straying sinners, to hug little children, to die for the world… You know what that means? Jesus loves you too! Jesus cares about you too! Whether you feel like the greatest or the least, you are special to Jesus. There doesn’t have to be any doubt in your mind that you’re Jesus’ dear brother or sister by faith in him.

So whom are we going to care about while we wait for our homecoming in heaven? Hopefully, we take a cue from Jesus. Christians care about everyone—even the “least.” Jesus loves it when you show love to those around you, even the most marginalized of society. I know it might seem like no one’s watching. I know it might seem like it’s not doing any good. But your King is watching, and he loves seeing your love to the hungry, to the thirsty, to strangers, to the sick, to those in prison… What an encouragement! “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”
