The Quiet Game

Our little boys sometimes like to play the “quiet game.” Do you know what the “quiet game” is? It’s when you try to sit as quietly and as still as possible for as long as possible. If you make a sound, you’re out. The person who stays quietest the longest wins. It’s hard! The quiet game is hard for little boys. It’s hard for big adults. We want to talk. We want to move around. We want to be active. We don’t want to sit and wait quietly. The quiet game usually doesn’t last very long!

Doesn’t it seem like God is asking us to play the quiet game right now? It’s hard! It’s hard to sit at home and not know how long. It’s hard because we think our lives depend on our working, on our talking, on our acting. We convince ourselves that we’re the solution, that we know the answers, that we can do it!

So God has stopped us in our tracks and said, “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10). God is asking us to play the quiet game right now, as he often does in our lives, because our lives don’t depend on us at all. They depend on him! Our talking and our acting isn’t the solution. God is! Listen: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). “The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress” (Psalm 46:11). We don’t need to complain or fret or frantically try to fix what’s outside our control. God’s got this! What’s left for us? “Be still and know that I am God.” Let’s play the quiet game…
