Life is a struggle. You know it! Whom are you struggling against today? I bet you could give very specific examples of people or groups with whom it feels you’re at war. That’s why we need the Bible’s reminder about whom our struggle is really against. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12). Your real enemy isn’t that person or group you have in your mind. It’s the devil. It’s his forces of evil at work in our world. It’s the sin he incites in our hearts. That’s the real struggle! Not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of evil in our world.
So I hope you realize you can’t win that struggle on your own. “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand” (Ephesians 6:13). We need God and his armor in us and around us every single day! Jesus is the One who crushed the devil’s head with his death and resurrection. Jesus is the One who rules over every power for the good of his people. Jesus is the One who died to forgive every one of our sins. Jesus is the One who empowers us to face our spiritual struggles every day. I know life is a struggle. Remember who the real enemy is, and rejoice that Jesus fights for you and in you every single day.
