What do you do in a time of a calamity or disaster? God told his people in the Old Testament exactly what to do. When King Solomon and the Israelites dedicated the temple in Jerusalem, God heard their prayers and told them this: “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:13-14). What do you do in a time of a calamity or disaster? You repent and pray and trust in God.
Those words weren’t written specifically for Americans during the coronavirus. They were God’s promise to his people in the Old Testament. But God’s promise to hear our prayers and forgive our sins certainly applies to us Christians today too. Every sickness or disaster reminds us how sinful and frail we are. So what do we do? We go to our God in prayer, humbly confess our sins, and place our lives in his hands. And what’s God’s response? “I will hear from heaven and forgive their sin.” What a God we have! He sent Jesus to die for us, rise for us, and give us life and peace. In this time of distress, let’s repent, pray, and trust in God’s forgiveness in Jesus.
