True Sacrifices for Lent

So what are you going to give up for Lent? It seems like that’s a question Christians ask this time of year. Meat on Fridays? Chocolate? Sweets? Before we decide, maybe we should ask God… What does God want us to give up for Lent? Here’s what the Bible says, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise” (Psalm 51:17). God wants your heart!

Lent isn’t about you or me giving up anything. It’s about everything that God gave up for us. Jesus gave up heaven and lived in humility here on earth. He gave up time, pleasure, and comfort to live in our place. Finally, Jesus gave up his life on the cross as the payment for our sins. What could we possibly give up that compares with that? Lent isn’t about you or me giving up anything. It’s about what Jesus gave up for us—everything! Just bring your broken, contrite heart that trusts in Jesus.
